Are you fit for Civil Services?
There are various sectors in the economy and several government departments which require efficient civil servants for their proper working.
The civil servants are mainly involved in four important functions. These are:-
- Advising the Government on policy.
- Assisting the Government in taking important decisions.
- Preparing and drafting new laws passed by the legislature.
- Helping the Government in running the country according to these laws.
Since a major part of Government’s actions and policy decisions are dependent on the civil servants, they are recruited on the basis of a strict and rigorous examination process. Being a civil servant is not at all an easy task and all do not have the capabilities or qualities to be one. So let’s have a look into the various personal and educational qualifications that are required in order to be a civil servant.
Firstly, in order to be a part of the civil services of the state one has to go through the thorough examination process, Civil Services Examination, which is conducted every year by Union Public Service Commission. The process involves 3 stages of examinations; Preliminary examination, Main Examination and Interview. (The entire process has already been discussed in my previous articles).
Since a major portion of the job of a civil servant involves decision- making, in order to be a civil servant one has to be a very good and quick decision maker. Decision making is not easy particularly when it has to be made in the common interest of all citizens residing in a country, state or district. But you are here to take the challenge, aren’t you?
Well, the question still remains. Who can be a civil servant?
There is no doubt that a candidate, who successfully clears all stages in style, is authorized for the position of a civil servant. But personally I feel that if you are in a regular habit of enriching yourself with vast knowledge on economy, politics, history, law and other relevant subjects and have the capability to rightfully utilize this knowledge for solving practical problems, you are the right person to own the position of a civil servant. Remember that this job not only gives you money, but also power, prestige and above all job security. So make it your dream, grab all opportunities and go for it only if you can do justice to the service required of you.
The role of Civil Servants today, is innovative and service- delivery oriented. To provide better services to the people at large, civil servants have to deal with daily life issues which change continuously and results in development and expansion. So a person with fresh viewpoint and good interpersonal skills can be a civil servant as their work includes influencing, negotiating and making an impact while dealing with the common people.
Certain personal traits are always required in every job. But a successful job owner requires hard work, determination and passion for his work. If these basic requirements are fulfilled, you are fit to be in the civil services.
Good Luck!
