Want to be an architect? Find out some facts about architecture studies

Architecture is a creative as well as a unique field pursued as a career option by many students across the world. Essentially, architecture is all about planning and designing structures. Before one decides to establish a career in this field, it is essential to have the right skills as well as orientation.

As an interested student keen to pursue a degree of an architect, you should first have the inclination for a highly creative as well as a technical job. There are several courses at different levels offered by colleges and universities. You may pursue a diploma or you may opt for a master’s program. In India, you study architecture once you have completed your H.S.C. education and studied mathematics as one of the subjects. This is a requirement for undergraduate students.

However, students from other study backgrounds can also opt for architectural studies at any of the reputed institutes. To gain admission into some top institutes, you may also have to clear entrance examinations. Through these entrance tests, candidates are selected based on their performance in the test as well as educational background.

If you want to pursue the studies in an Indian institute, then the most popular course is the B.Arch program whose duration is of five years. This course would usually cost the incumbent close to 2 lakhs Indian rupees. There are several private institutes offering the programs but they charge exorbitantly from students. Not just master’s courses, even diploma programs command high fees. One advantage to students is that they can avail of very high scholarship amounts if they perform well in the entrance examination.

Once you complete the degree, you will be hounded by several job offers as architects are much in demand considering the booming real estate market. Job opportunities are immense and one needs to choose their job wisely. For architects, it is easy to find a job in any government-based organization like Archaeological Department, Public Works Department, Town and Country Planning Organization, Ministry of Defence, Department of Railways, National Institute of Urban Affairs among other government firms. As a certified architect, you can also have your practice by setting up your architectural firm and working independently.

Though, the field is immensely challenging, it gives students to chase their passion. You need to be extremely focused on your studies and should exhibit the traits of a perfectionist when you are pursuing a career in the field of architecture. The job of an architect is creatively satisfying. However, it comes with its own challenges of finishing projects within tight deadlines as per client’s requirements. This is a field which allows the professional to express himself through tangible, real objects. The architect has a specific vision in his mind which he executes while completing the project.

A successful architect is one who maintains a fine balance between his creative juices and the financial constraints of his client. Unlike other work fields where work tends to get repetitive and eventually boring after a certain period, an architect gets to do different stuff with every new project.
