MBA from IIMs Vs Other Institutes

Are you an MBA aspirant nurturing a dream of being a part of The Indian Institute of Management? Do you have a similar opinion like many that pursuing MBA from a non-IIM is enough to bring an end to your career?

If yes ; hold on and think twice.

Whether you are doing an MBA from an IIM or a non-IIM, it doesn’t really decide your career graph. In IIMs (Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Bangalore, and Lucknow) you definitely get the opportunity to see how a top management institute of India works, or to converse and communicate with some highly knowledgeable individuals who are going to lead some top companies in future, but being a part of a non-IIM doesn’t deter you from all these. What, if even after being a part of a prestigious IIM, you are not being able to cope with its vast syllabus and end up getting an average job on account of your disastrous semester results? When you spend around 15Lakhs for an IIM MBA degree, how will you afford to do a job with a mediocre salary?

In my previous article, “Institutes India & Abroad”, I listed the top B-schools in India ranked according to their infrastructure and placement records. You will be surprised to notice that IIM- Indore and IIM- Kozhikode ranked 5 and 6 respectively, whereas Xavier Labor Relation Institute- Jamshedpur, Indian School of Business- Hyderabad and Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi occupied the 2nd, 3rd and 4th position respectively.

Don’t form a false opinion that getting an MBA degree from IIM is the sheer way to success. MBA is a course which teaches you business. In order to manage a business and the people associated with it, one doesn’t require the support of an IIM degree. All one requires is the ability to manage things properly, the capability to lead people and the right attitude towards the job. An IIM degree cannot give you all these. It can only enhance these skills already existing in you and so can a top-rated B-school.

Some new IIMS have also come up recently in the last few years in Ranchi, Shillong, and Rohtak. These new IIMs are still going through the process of being mentored by the older IIMs. Some experts are of the opinion that it is better to opt for the top b-schools like XLRI and NMIMS as compared to these emerging IIMs.

Indeed, if you have to take a smart decision, do a proper research before selecting your institute. XLRI, ISB, S.P Jain Institute, NMIMS, SIBM, IMT- Ghaziabad are some of the best options available if you can’t make it to the IIMS. You can also refer my previous article which enlists top 20 MBA institutes in India and best 10 in abroad.

So before concluding there’s again a reminder for all MBA aspirants: – Don’t be obsessed with the dream of making it to the IIMs. It will only lead to frustration. Instead focus on where you are and give it your best. Always remember that your competition is not with others. They don’t deserve it. Your competition is only with yourself. So try to be a winner every day.

Good Luck!
