Curriculum of IAS exam with new UPSC changes
The Union Public Service Commission has incorporated some vital changes in the pattern and syllabus of the Indian Administrative Service Examination in the past few years. If you are an IAS aspirant then you must keep yourself updated regarding these important variations and prepare yourself accordingly. The new format of the IAS examination is as follows:-
- PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION
The examination shall comprise two compulsory papers of 200 marks each. Both the papers will consist of objective type questions.
PAPER 1 – Duration- 2 hours (200 marks)
- Current events of national and international importance
- History of India and Indian National Movement
- Indian and World Geography- Physical, social, economic geography of India and the world
- Indian Polity and Governance- Constitution, political system, Panchayati Raj, public policy, rights issues, etc.
- Economic and Social development- Sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and climate change- that do not require subject specialization
- General Science
PAPER 2- Duration- 2 hours (200 marks)
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills
- Logical reasoning and Analytical ability
- Decision making and problem solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy (Class X level)
- English language comprehension skills (Class X level)
Mains Examination
The examination judges the intellectual traits and depth of understanding of the candidates rather than measuring their information and capacity to memorize.
PAPER -1 (Duration- 3 hours)
- Essay- 200 marks
- English Comprehension and English Précis (Class X level)- 100 marks
PAPER- 2 (Duration- 3 hours)
General Studies 1- 250 marks (Indian culture, modern Indian history, Freedom struggle, History and Geography of the world and society)
PAPER- 3 (Duration- 3 hours)
General Studies 2- 250 marks (Indian Constitution, Government, Polity, Social justice, Development industry, India and its neighbors, International Institutions and International Relations)
PAPER- 3 (Duration- 3 hours)
General Studies 3- 250 marks (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster management)
PAPER- 4 (Duration- 3 hours)
General Studies 4- 250 marks (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude)
PAPER- 5 (Duration- 3 hours)
Optional subject- Paper 1- 250 marks
PAPER- 6 (Duration- 3 hours)
Optional Subject- Paper 2- 250 marks
WRITTEN TEST (Total) – 1800 marks
PERSONALITY TEST- 275 marks
GRAND TOTAL- 2075 marks

NOTE: – Question Papers will be of conventional type.
