Career prospects of LAW
Recently law as a career option has been gaining a lot of popularity. Many students, right after completing their second year of junior college i.e. 12th, enroll themselves for B.A.L.L.B., which is a 5-year course. Apart from the old wings of law like civil, labor, criminal, taxation, corporate, and election; the new branches like cyber, intellectual property, international, and space law have also evolved. Aspirants have the option to select any category, which they are best at and specialize in that.
Scope of Profession:
Law ranks amongst one of the highest paying professions. As a fact, it was once counted as a royal profession. As the time has passed, the glory might have faded away but it still is a reputed profession that requires intelligent minds. The fields of corporate law and international law have a great demand of brilliant lawyers. Civil and criminal law are known to be very interesting; therefore many aspirants plan to specialize in that. Whatever be the area of specialization, every student has to be well-versed with the basics of the legal system in India.
Eligibility Criteria:
Candidates are required to complete 10+2 years of education before applying for B.A., L.L.B. (Honors). There are several universities in India offering part-time L.L.B. degree to graduates. The selection criterion depends on the marks scored by the candidates during their graduation. Some noted universities hold an entrance exam for the students. Opportunities:
Lawyers have an option to either go for the public or government sector or work in the private sector. Those working in the private sector basically handle all the legal matters of a company or an organization whereas the government sector offers the traditional work of handling cases allotted by the government. Private sector is known to provide better rewards than the government sector. The lawyer when working for an organization has to participate in the strategic decisions of the management, joint ventures and alliances, and so on. More and more students are opting for private sector these days.
Pay:
Law is a well-paid and reputed profession not just in India but all over the world. Remuneration depends on the field of law that the student has chosen for, since law is an extremely diverse stream. The pay rises with experience. Higher number of successful cases enables the lawyer to command a huge fee. It majorly depends on the performance.
Options for beginners to start-up:
- Begin with self-practice
- Get a job in a law firm, which may specialize in litigation, or chamber work, or maybe both
- Enter the industry by getting a job of a law officer
- Go for government jobs
- Opt for public or banking industry jobs

Law has always been a great profession. Critics often say that it has lost all respect and charm but the truth is world cannot survive without law and law cannot work without lawyers. So, simply work hard and keep improving your performance, respect and pay will also increase along the way.
