In order to build a successful career in law, students can opt for 5years B.A.LL.B course after 12th or 3 years LLB course after graduation in any discipline. However most of the top universities are providing for the 5years course which has been proved more beneficial and less time consuming.
Admission to the top law universities in India is regulated by the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) though few colleges also conduct their own admission tests. The CLAT is conducted to assess the students in subjects like English and Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics (class X level), Logical Reasoning, Legal Aptitude, General Knowledge and Current Affairs. It is an MCQ paper and the system of negative marking has not yet been introduced.

Lawyer/ Advocate– Lawyers are in huge demand at present due to reasons well known. It’s a very rewarding profession though one needs to put in lots of efforts and dedication in order to succeed in this field. After completing graduation or masters in law, whatever the case may be, one needs to register one’s name in the Bar Council of the respective state in order to practice as a lawyer.
Corporate Legal advisors– There are a plethora of opportunities for the legal graduates in the corporate field, at present. During the course itself students are sent for moot courts competitions and internships in various companies. Campus Interviews are held in the college premises and students, even before completing graduation, are endowed with well paying jobs.
Judge – The most respected profession in the legal field is that of a judge. However one needs to go through a rigorous examination process in order to be a part of the judicial services. The Judicial services have two entry levels. The first one is for the fresh graduates who are appointed as magistrates after they qualify the entrance examination conducted by the respective State Public Service Commission. The syllabus for this examination comprises English, general knowledge, local language along with law subjects. The second level is for those who have at least seven year’s experience of litigating practice and wish to join the Higher Judicial services. In this level too, a competitive examination is conducted and those who qualify, are generally appointed as Additional District Judge with a salary package ranging from INR 70000- 90000.
Company Secretaries– A law degree along with a degree in Company Secretaries is a promising career option. In order to be a company secretary, one has to clear the Foundation, Executive and Professional level examinations conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India along with 15month internship and necessary trainings.
However this is not all. Students having a passion for teaching can be appointed as professors or lecturers in leading universities after completing PhD and LLB. There are a plethora of opportunities in the public sector as well. Individuals, after completing graduation in law, may appear for the examinations conducted by the State and on qualifying, they are appointed as legal advisors in several government departments. Thus career prospects in the field of law are never ending. One needs to love the subject and explore each and every part of it.
